Tournament, Conditions & Course Info

Part of the recently founded Asia Swing on the PGA Tour, the ZOZO Championship has taken place in each of the last two seasons. Thanks to the PGA collaborating with the Japan Golf Tour, the top seven players in that sphere will feature, alongside the three top finishers from the Bridgestone Open, which is one of Japan’s flagship events. The rest of the field is made up of the top 60 from last season’s Fedex Cup and sponsorship exemptions.

A Par 70 and somewhat unusual in its layout, Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club boasts three Par 5’s and five Par 3’s, and it’s very much a course where accuracy and shot selection from the tee is critical. Narrow, tree-lined fairways increase the importance of choosing the right club and shot from the tee box.

Being hot with the putter will also be important this week, as the greens are expected to be fast and undulating, while they are on the small side by general PGA Tour standards, which suggests that accuracy on approach is not something to forget either. The winner will undoubtedly be somebody who putts well, hits lots of GIR’s and makes light work of the scorable Par 5’s.

Expert Pick #1 – Hideki Matsuyama Top Five Finish @+333

Winner of the 2020 Masters, Hideki Matsuyama hasn’t hit the heights for a while, but this looks to be the perfect opportunity for the Japan native to thrive, and for me, he’s about as good as it gets in terms of top-five picks this week.

The 15th best player on the PGA Tour last season in terms of strokes gained: tee-to-green, as well as the 17th best when it came to strokes gained: approach, the man from Ehime has about as good a record as anybody on Japanese shores, while he has form in this event, finishing second to Tiger Woods in 2019’s inaugural running.

Fedex Cup Rank: 33 | Fedex Cup Points: 94 | OWGR: 19 Approx. Start Time: e.g. 2:30 p.m. ET

Expert Pick #2 – Rickie Fowler Top 10 Finish @+275

It’s been a tough couple of years for Rickie Fowler, but the Californian caught fire in Vegas last week, where he finished T3, and that performance could quite easily act as a springboard for further impressive displays.

Accuracy is going to be important this week, as mentioned above, and Fowler comes here in accurate mood having ranked second for Driving Accuracy last week, while he also finished first for Greens in Regulation, which really does bode well ahead of a four rounds at a course where finding no shortage of greens is going to be one of the keys to success. With his game clearly in the best shape its been in for a long time, and with momentum on his side, the 32-year-old can pick up the baton and run in Japan. Those looking for a solid top-ten option should side with Rickie.

Fedex Cup Rank: 15 | Fedex Cup Points: 163 | OWGR: 82

Approx. Start Time: e.g. 2:30 p.m. ET

Expert Pick #3 – C.T. Pan Top Ten Finish @+350

C.T. Pan didn’t exactly thrive when featuring in the ZOZO back in 2019, but his game has evolved since then, while the man from Taiwan has hit the ground running this season. First time out, he finished T11 at the Sanderson Farms, while he built on that excellent effort by finishing T6 at the Fortinet Championship straight after.

Right now, Pan ranks as the sixth best player on tour for strokes gained: total, while his dialled in approach game – currently ranks 11th on tour for strokes gained: approach – should hold him in good stead. Throw in that he has plenty of form in Japan, like when picking up a bronze medal at the Olympics a few months ago, and the 29-year-old rates as a player to support.

Fedex Cup Rank: 18 | Fedex Cup Points: 151 | OWGR: 132

Approx. Start Time: e.g. 2:30 p.m. ET

Accuracy and approach needed

As the PGA Tour makes the trip to Japan, players will need to have accuracy in mind if they want to thrive. Tight fairways, that can be hard to find, demand that the correct club is chosen, but that’s not all. Finding the short grass will be necessary, but to score well this week, missing the greens is not something that can be done too often, so sharp approach play is needed. The in-form Rickie Fowler, who was about as accurate as it got last week, can once again make his mark, while Hideki Matsuyama, who finished second at this venue two years ago, is another who ought to go close.
