Tournament, Conditions & Course Info

And we’re back in California, for another of the PGA Tour’s flagship events. A regular on the schedule, the Genesis Invitational, hosted by the legendary Tiger Woods, sees almost all of the big dogs get down to business. The likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, all of whom currently occupy a place in the world’s top six, return to action, while world number one Jon Rahm is in the field too, alongside fellow top-ten players Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Hideki Matsuyama. rapidly rising star Scottie Scheffler, who picked up his first win on the PGA Tour on Sunday, will also be involved, so there’s absolutely no shortage of top-end talent this week.

Many of the tournaments in recent months have been set up for attacking golf and the scoring has been low, though we could see something different this week. With tight, tree-lined fairways, Riviera Country Club, renovated by famed architect Tom Fazio, is a test of accuracy, and is a course more suited to a plotter rather than a bomber. Precise placement from the tee will be the order of the day in Pacific Palisades, while birdies are likely to be at a premium.

The ability to hit greens in regulation is likely to be important this week, so be on the lookout for guys who can get the ball on the dancefloor with regularity. Each of the last five winners here have finished the week inside the top ten for GIR, with only two of those five being outside the top two in that area.

Expert Pick #1 – Xander Schauffele to Win @+2200

Having played some truly outstanding golf at the Phoenix Open last week. Xander Schauffele was hugely unfortunate not to be involved in that play-off for first place, finishing just one shot off Patrick Cantlay and eventual winner Scottie Scheffler, but supporters of the 28-year-old should not be deterred, as his time is surely right around the corner.

Arriving here in fine form, Schauffele has shown a liking for tracks such as this one, as his performances at places like Torrey Pines, Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot and Pebble Beach suggest. In US Opens at those venues, the Californian has posted finishes of fifth, seventh, third and fifth. With lots of top-five finishes in the majors under his belt, he’s undoubtedly a man for the big occasion, and with the increased prize money and the star-studded line-up, this is definitely a big occasion.

His form in this event isn’t amazing with three top-15 finishes in the last four seasons, but we know he’s got the game to hit the heights at a venue of this nature. Hitting greens in regulation will be paramount this week, and nobody hit more greens in regulation than Xander last week in Phoenix, where the four-time PGA Tour winner also ranked 3rd for total driving and second for total accuracy, two stats that are hugely eye-catching ahead of the assignment in Pacific Palisades.

This elite player clearly has his game in fine form, so much so that he really must go close here, and so much so that he probably should be shorter in the betting. If bettors want to support someone with a real chance, then Xander Schauffele is the man at +2200.

He’s a big for the big occasions, Fedex Cup Rank: 42 | Fedex Cup Points: 300 | OWGR: 6

Expert Pick #2 – Xander Schauffele Top Ten Finish @+260

I’m doubling down on Xander this week. The California native looks to have everything in favour. He’s in outstanding form, his profile is perfect for a course of this nature, and we know he’s a man that handles the big occasion. Another box that’s ticked by Schauffele is the Tom Fazio box. He picked up his gold medal on a Tom Fazio course, while most of his practice in his native California is carried out on a Fazio-designed track too, which bodes well given the Fazio remodel than Riviera underwent in recent years.

For my money, Schauffele is going very close this week, but if you’re not sold on him as an outright bet, then get a few nickels and dimes down on a top-ten finish.

Fedex Cup Rank: 42 | Fedex Cup Points: 300 | OWGR: 6

Expert Pick #3 – Marc Leishman Top Ten Finish @+550

Staying on the top-ten thread, Marc Leishman is another well worth tailing this week. The Australian has some solid form in this event, finishing fifth and fourth here in the past, while like Xander, he has some excellent correlating form at places such as Torrey Pines, where he’s twice finished second, and where he also won the 2020 Farmers.

In addition, Leishman ranks highly in most strokes gained categories ahead of this competition, while his strokes gained numbers at Riviera are quite solid too. Seventh for strokes gained: approach, which is not to be sneezed at, of those who have played here more than once, only 14 players have gained more strokes on average overall.

At the end of the day, the man who has six PGA Tour wins to his name has more going for him than his odds suggest, and it really would be little surprise if Leish played his way to another top-ten.

2022 Genesis Invitational Additional Picks

Top-Five

One player to finish top-five.

Dustin Johnson (+350)

Dustin Johnson knows how to deliver the goods at the Genesis, it’s as simple as that. With six top-five finishes here since 2009, the current world number is the number one player in the field for strokes gained on this track in the last five seasons. If you’re looking for an elite player with very realistic top-five chances, then DJ is your man.

Top-10

One player to finish top-10.

Talor Gooch (+450)

Talor Gooch proved once again why he is a man creeping up the world rankings last week. But for a blip mid-way through the final round at TPC Scottsdale, the 30-year-old, would’ve finished inside the top ten. Finishing T27 or significantly better in four of his last five events, Gooch is a player on the up, while he has form here too, finishing T10 and T12 in the last two seasons.

Top-20

One player to finish top-20.

Mathew NeSmith (+800)

Mathew NeSmith hasn’t been in outstanding form of late, but there were signs of life last week, while he did well here last season finishing in a tie for 20th, ranking highly for both strokes gained: off-the-tee and strokes gained: approach. At a big price, this is one player who could surprise a few and creep into the upper echelons of the leaderboard.

First-Round Leader

One player to post the low score Thursday.

Patrick Cantlay (+2500)

One of the best players on the planet right now, Patrick Cantlay arrives here in typically hot form having been up with the lead throughout in Phoenix last week, losing out only to a rampant Scottie Scheffler in a play-off. The current FedEx Cup champion likes it here too and he certainly has a fast start in his armoury, holding the first round lead or finishing inside the top five after round one in three of his six appearances at this event.

The Big Hero

Underdog with chances to win.

Jason Kokrak (+8000)

With some steady finishes at this event in the bag, Jason Kokrak is a player who could easily outplay his rather hefty price-tag. Twice a winner in 2021, we know that Kokrak can tussle in high-quality fields, while his second here in 2016 is positive. Steady in many of the key stroke gained areas, the three-time PGA Tour winner is one to watch out for at big odds.

100/100
Schauffele to rock the Riviera

A player made for the tough test, which is exactly what Riviera Country Club provides, Schauffele’s time is coming once again, and with everything seemingly aligning for the 28-year-old ahead of a trip to his native California, the time could be now. After an excellent performance last week, on the sort of course that suits his game, the in-form Olympic Gold medalist looks set for a big week.
