Memorial Tournament

Winner: Billy Horschel Wins

Another exciting and epic finish at Fort Worth, one that finished in yet another play-off, the PGA Tour heads to Ohio, where the lucrative Memorial Tournament is set to take place at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Memorial Tournament General Information:

Date: 2 June – 5 June, 2022

TV-Time: Golf Channel, 3:00 p.m. ET

Venue: Muirfield Village Golf Club

Location: Dublin, Ohio

Prize Money: $12,000,000 ($2,160,000 1st Place)

Winner last year: Patrick Cantlay

Tournament, Conditions & Course Info

The Memorial has been won by some big names in recent times, and there’s no shortage of big-name players in the field this week, which isn’t exactly surprising given the amount of prize money on offer. Unlike many regular PGA Tour events, the Memorial Tournament offers players the chance to fight it out for a share of $12,000,000, with $2,160,000 going to the winner.

2021 victor Patrick Cantlay returns to defend his crown, while world number two and 2020 winner Jon Rahm will be present too, alongside fellow top-ten players such as Rory McIlroy, Cameron Smith and Collin Morikawa, who won this event in 2020 during the revised COVID schedule. Other previous winners of this tournament set to tee it up this week at Bryson DeChambeau, Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Kuchar, Jason Dufner, William McGirt and David Lingmerth.

Designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus, Muirfield Village, which was named after the Scottish venue where Nicklaus won the British Open Championship for the first time, represents a real test of a golfer’s armoury. The Par 72 measures out at a little over 7,300 yards and contains plenty of hazards, especially of the wet variety, with water in play on over half the holes. And is typical of a Jack Nicklaus track, players will be tested around the greens.

Performing well around what can only be described as tricky greens this week will be imperative, with each of the last three winners of this tournament finishing the week inside the top five for strokes gained: around-the-green.

Expert Pick #1 – Matt Fitzpatrick Top 10 Finish @+275

After going close (T2) at the Wells Fargo, Matthew Fitzpatrick’s fine campaign continued at the PGA Championship, where he finished in a tie for fifth, recording his sixth top-ten of the season. In addition to his excellent recent form, the Englishman rates as one of the better players on tour around the green, so he’s hard to ignore this week.

We know that scrambling will be important at Muirfield Village, and that won’t bother Fitz, who currently ranks third on the PGA Tour in that area, while the fact that he’s 11th on tour for strokes gained: around-the-green bodes well. This is also the man who leads the season for strokes gained: total. At a venue where he’s finished third before, the world number 15 is worthy of support in the top-ten market.

Fedex Cup Rank: 27 | Fedex Cup Points: 795 | OWGR: 15

Expert Pick #2 – Jordan Spieth Top 10 Finish @+225

Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth has made marked progress this season in his bid to get back to the top of world golf after some time in the wilderness, so much so that he’s back in the world’s top ten and now appears to be in a position to once again tussle with the big boys.

The Texan will head to Ohio off the back of a win, a second and a T7 finish from his last four appearances, so he’s clearly hot right now, while the fact that he’s one of the better scramblers on tour, ranking ninth in that area, is highly favourable. Strong approach play, ranking 15th on tour for strokes gained: approach, should help too, while he knows how to get it done around these greens, ranking as the 10th best in this field for strokes gained: around-the-green at Muirfield Village in the last five seasons. Such stats point towards another big week for the former world number one.

Fedex Cup Rank: 8| Fedex Cup Points: 1,357| OWGR: 10

Expert Pick #3 – Matt Kuchar Top 20 Finish @+275

43-year-old Matt Kuchar is well into the twilight of his PGA Tour career and as such is no longer a regular challenger at the top of the leaderboard, and yet he still ranks comfortably inside the top 100, while he’s inside the top 40 in terms of FedEx Cup points, such is the ability of the nine-time PGA Tour winner.

Moreover, Kuchar comes into this tournament in pretty solid form having made the cut in each of his last six events, in four of which he’s finished T16 or better, including a T2 at the Valero and a T3 at the RBC Heritage. We’re also talking about a man who is statistically the second best scrambler on tour right now, not to mention ranked first for strokes gained: around-the-green. Couple the above with his history at the Memorial, where since 2008, Kuchar has won once and posted six additional top-tens, and it’s hard to rate the Florida native as anything other than a solid top-20 play at appealing odds.

2022 Memorial Tournament Additional Picks

Top-Five

One player to finish top-five.

Collin Morikawa (+500)

If a solid top-five candidate is what you seek, then look no further than Collin Morikawa, who is second to only John Rahm for strokes gained: total at this venue in the last five seasons, during which time, the two-time major winner has won here and finished second. There should be more to come.

Top-10

One player to finish top-10.

Patrick Cantlay (+200)

You won’t get big odds about Patrick Cantlay this week, but there’s good reason for that, and if you want to side with a player who has crystal clear claims of hitting the top ten, then there are few better than the seven-time PGA Tour winner, who has a win and a second from his last three starts. Moreover, Cantlay has won this tournament twice, last year and in 2019, and he’s the number three player in this field for strokes gained: total at Muirfield Village in the last five seasons. Hard to ignore.

Top-20

One player to finish top-20.

Rickie Fowler (+350)

It’s certainly not been a vintage campaign for Ricker Fowler, but there have been signs of life in recent weeks, with the Floridian making the cut in each of his last three, while he has performed credibly at this venue. Fowler has three top-tens at the Memorial, as well as two additional top-20 finishes.

First-Round Leader

One player to post the low score Thursday.

Collin Morikawa (+3500)

Collin Morikawa has every chance of going close this week, and he’s also likely to make a fast start. The world number four has held the lead after day one in two of his three appearances at the Memorial, so don’t be surprised if he bursts out the traps on a course that he clearly enjoys playing.

The Big Hero

Underdog with chances to win.

Adam Scott (+7000)

If your heart yearns for a big-priced winner, then take a punt on Adam Scott, who has refound some form this season, finishing T5 at the CJ Cup and T4 at the Genesis. Historically, he’s also enjoyed himself at this tournament, finishing inside the top five on four occasions, while he was far from disgraced when finishing T16 here last season. Ranks highly across lots of SG areas at Muirfield Village in the last five seasons, ranking fourth in this field for strokes gained: total here since 2016, so don’t be surprised if he Aussie outplays what are sizable odds.

100/100
Action around the greens incoming

As is the case with lots of Jack Nicklaus designs, the fairways are relatively simple to hit at Muirfield Village, and although the rough can be particularly unforgiving, keeping it in the short stuff off the tee isn’t too hard. Where it gets tough is as players approach greens that can be hard to navigate, many of which are easy to miss, so performing well around the greens will be key this week, as all of the recent winners of this tournament have proved. Look to those players who both scramble well and typically gain strokes around the greens.
