Tournament, Conditions & Course Info

It’s that time again. The time players and fans alike look forward to most. Major time. Nowadays, after The Masters, comes the US PGA Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of golf. With last year’s champion out, who will reign supreme at Southern Hill Country Club, which hosts this tournament for the fifth time.

The return of major action sees the return of a first class field. World number one Scottie Scheffler will be in attendance, and he will be joined by each of the other nine players currently inside the top 10 according to the Official World Golf Rankings. Other notable inclusions are Hideki Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson, Sam Burns, Brooks Koepka, who won this event in both 2018 and 2019, and Bryson DeChambeau. One player that everybody wants to see is the king of golf Tiger Woods, who is due to appear for the first time since his comeback at the Masters last month.

Designed by Perry Maxwell and opened in 1936, the Championship Course and Southern Hills has traditionally featured tree lined fairways and formidable rough, and those things still remain, but after restoration work carried out in 2018, there’s more danger, new hole locations and smaller greens, meaning that getting in close will be anything but simple. Sharp run-off areas make the challenge on approach even harder.

Expert Pick #1 – Shane Lowry Top 10 Finish @+350

Shane Lowry has performed as though his time in a big event is coming. He was T2 at the Honda, T13 at THE PLAYERS and T3 at The Masters. Since finishing third at Augusta, the Irishman hasn’t exactly gone backwards either, finishing T3 at the RBC Heritage, before finishing 13th with his playing partner at the Zurich Classic. His game is in great shape, make no mistake about that.

It’s also worth noting that across the last eight events on the PGA Tour, the 2019 Open Championship winner ranks first for strokes gained: total, as well as sixth for strokes gained: tee-to-green. We’re also talking about the number one player on tour right now when it comes to proximity to the hole, so getting in close to the testing greens in Tulsa should be no problem for the man who also ranks fourth on tour for strokes gained: approach.

At the end of the day, Lowry has the game to trouble those at the head of the market, while he’s already proven himself in the big events this season. For my money, at odds of +350, he’s a must-have top-10 pick.

Fedex Cup Rank: 29 | Fedex Cup Points: 764 | OWGR: 27

Expert Pick #2 – Keegan Bradley Top 20 Finish @+350

Keegan Bradley is one of the most in-form golfers on the planet right now, so I can’t help but feel that he’s been slightly undervalued in the betting. OK, this is a huge event, with a field as strong as they come, but we’re talking about a major winner, who has recent form figures of T8, T4 and T2.

To get in position ahead of those really tough approach shots this week, you’re going to need to be strong off the tee, and the 35-year-old has been just that this season. He currently ranks 20th for strokes gained: off-the-tee on the PGA Tour, while across the last eight events, he ranks 13th for strokes gained: total. He’s als T10 on tour for proximity to the hole, which is eye-catching given the importance of not only hitting greens but going close from the fairway on the Championship Course and Southern Hills. Other players may seem a more obvious play in both the T10 and T20 markets, but as mentioned above, Bradley is in fantastic form, and he has the game to handle a test of this nature. Discount the Woodstock native at your peril.

Fedex Cup Rank: 32 | Fedex Cup Points: 751 | OWGR: 45

Expert Pick #3 – Gary Woodland Top 20 Finish @+450

At slightly bigger odds than the two bets above, I like Gary Woodland for a top-20 finish this week. The one-time major winner has found his feet again this season, and he has plenty of attributes that make him a good fit for the Championship Course and Southern Hills.

Being long and accurate will be key ahead of tough approach shots this week, and Woodland knows how to fire them down there with the driver. 17th on tour for driving distance, he also tends to hit the ball low, which should help in the wind that’s expected to hit the Tulsa venue. We’re also talking about a guy who has hit plenty of greens in regulation in recent times, ranking ninth for GIR at the Valero Texas Open and second for GIR and the Mexico Open more recently. Sure, he didn’t turn any head at the Masters, but Augusta has never been his venue. Crucially, he has form on typically tough PGA Championship tracks, finishing sixth and eighth at this tournament in 2018 and 2019, so don’t be surprised if the man just outside of the top 100 in the world outplays what is a rather hefty price-tag.

2022 US PGA Championship Additional Picks

Top-Five

One player to finish top-five.

Rory McIlroy (+500)

The Rory of old has been lurking this season, so it would be little surprise if he went very close here, much like he did at Augusta last month. Two top-five finishes in his last two appearances, the Northern Irishman has been outstanding off the tee, ranking third on tour for strokes gained: off-the-tee, while he knows how to hit his stride on the big occasion. Big performance expected.

Top-10

One player to finish top-10.

Collin Morikawa (+210)

Another of the big names who looks sure to go well this week is Collin Morikawa, whose precise play should be perfect for the Southern Hills. Only Lowry rates above him in terms of proximity to the hole, while he’s currently eighth on tour for strokes gained: approach. Another player who often saves his best for the big occasion, the two-time major winner rates as a rock-solid top-10 option.

Top-20

One player to finish top-20.

Justin Rose (+500)

What’s interesting about Justin Rose is that Rory McIlroy is the only player in this field with more Bentgrass green wins on the PGA Tour. The Englishman also has a decent record at the PGA Championship, finishing inside the top 20 in three of the last five years, while he’s posted five top 20’s in his last ten majors. As is a case with a few this week, there’s reason to believe he could outplay his odds.

The Big Hero

Underdog with chances to win.

Ricky Fowler (+20000)

Once considered a major winner in waiting, especially when finishing top five in each of the four majors in a single season, but it hasn’t quite worked for Rickie Fowler, who is now without a win since 2019. However, he’s shown glimpses of his former self this season, while he warmed up nicely for this event by finishing T21 at the Wells Fargo when last in action recently. Add in a history of strong finishes in this event, including an eighth last season, and Fowler is worth chancing if you’re on the hunt for a big-priced winner.

100/100
Stay on the greens at Southern Hills

Finding the fairway with regularity will be key this week, as trouble lurks in both the treelines and the rough, but most important of all will be getting it on the greens on approach. The putting surfaces on the Championship Course and Southern Hills are tight, and there are sharp run-off areas left and right, so precision on approach is key. Look to those players who can get it close on a regular basis, especially under the pressure of playing in a major.
