Two teams with identical 7-0 records will square off on Friday night in the marquee game in college basketball The Iowa Hawkeyes and Purdue Boilermakers will kick off their Big Ten conference schedules against one another, with the winner moving to 8-0 and the loser picking up their first loss of the season. And while both teams have the same record, they have very different rankings heading into this Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers matchup.
The Iowa Hawkeyes come into this contest unranked despite not losing a game since the tip off of the 2021-2022 season. Purdue, meanwhile, enters this matchup ranked second in the country before this contest begins. The question now is whether or not Purdue can live up to its ranking with a convincing win here, or if Iowa can surprise some people and make it clear that they belong in the top-25.
Iowa Hawkeyes – Hoping To Pass Another Test
Iowa comes into this game at 7-0, but the most important game on their schedule so far was the one they played in most recently. In their last time out, the Hawkeyes got the better of the Virginia Cavaliers by a point in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. That served not only as their first true road win of the season, but also as their first passed test of the 2021-2022 college basketball campaign.
And while Iowa deserves praise for winning on the road against a team with the pedigree that Virginia has, it is also worth pointing out that their defense left a lot to be desired in that game. Giving up 74 points to any Virginia team isn’t a great night at the office on defense, but that is especially true against this Virginia team, which is having a down year. If they want to beat Purdue, the Hawkeyes will really need to key in on the defensive end of the floor.

Purdue Boilermakers – Winning With Offense
The Purdue Boilermakers’ last game also took place in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, though the Boilermakers were much more convincing in their win than the Hawkeyes were. Purdue crushed Florida State by a final margin of 93-65 to move to 7-0 on the season, never trailing in one of the more impressive performances of the season by any college basketball team. What stood out in that game was the ruthless efficiency of the Purdue offense, which they will look to replicate on Friday night.
Purdue shot 59% from the field against Florida State, including 48% from three-point range in their 28-point victory. While those numbers might be hard to replicate against Iowa, Iowa has shown that they are capable of defensive lapses already this season. If Purdue can execute well for the second straight game against a Power 5 opponent, the Boilermakers could cruise to 8-0 for the season.

Expert Pick #1 – Iowa +12 @ -115
The first bet to place on this game is Iowa +12 at -115 odds. Purdue has shown that their ceiling is much higher than that of Iowa in the early portion of the season. But Iowa has proven that they can grind out wins in a hostile environment, and should be able to hang around for the bulk of this game in another hostile environment.
Expert Pick #2 – Over 161 @ -105
Our next bet for this game is the over 161 at -105 odds. This is a very high total for a college basketball game, as most teams are happy to crack 70 points on the scoreboard in a college basketball game. But the Hawkeyes and Boilermakers are different, as they are ranked in the top-three in offensive rating by Kenpom heading into this matchup. Expect a high-scoring affair here.
Expert Pick #3 – Iowa Over 74.5 Points @ -115
The final bet to lock in for this game is Iowa over 74.5 points at -115 odds. The Hawkeyes aren’t likely to win this game, but they are going to put up points. The question for them is whether they can get enough stops on defense to mount a serious charge at an upset, but their ability to score the basketball is not going to be questioned as they take on the Boilermakers in West Lafayette.
This has the potential to be one of the more fun games of the early college basketball season, as the Hawkeyes and Boilermakers have the ability to light up the scoreboard. They should do just that here, even though Purdue certainly has the best shot to win this game. If nothing else, Iowa will make this an entertaining affair, and should cover in a shootout.
