UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Rodriguez General Information:
- Date: Saturday, October 9, 2021
- TV-Time: ESPN+, 1:00 p.m. ET
- Venue: UFC Apex
- Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
- Fights: 5 Fights on the Main Card and 6 fights on the Preliminary Card
- Main Event: Mackenzie Dern vs. Marina Rodriguez
Expert Pick #1 – Dern to win @–163
Dern vs. Rodriguez pits two mixed martial artists with very contrasting styles against each other. Mackenzie Dern is an expert grappler and an excellent submission artist. She has won 7 out of her last 11 fights via submission. The streaking sensation is also on a current winning streak of 4 fights. Thus, she comes into this headline matchup against Marina Rodriguez riding the momentum wave.
On the other hand, Marina Rodriguez is a complete Muay Thai specialist with decent wrestling. She is currently on a 2-fight win streak coming into this one. In what appears to be a striking vs. grappling match, the winner in this bout could very well go down to the fighter with better execution. Marina Rodriguez has shown in the past that she can defend takedowns and handle herself very well on the ground. But she has not fought a grappler as good as Mackenzie Dern. Both fighters have excellent cardio to last them the entire five rounds, but if much of it is spent on the ground, we don’t see the bout going the distance. Our experts predict a Mackenzie Dern win on the night.
Records: Mackenzie Dern 11-1-0 | Marina Rodriguez 14-1-2 Main Card – Women’s Strawweight (115lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 4 p.m. ET
Expert Pick #2 – Gutierrez to win @–143
In another bout that makes for a striking vs. grappling matchup, Chris Gutierrez takes on Felipe Corales. Gutierrez’s volume striking meets Corales’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling. Despite being predominantly a striker, Gutierrez also has excellent takedown defence and would not be completely overwhelmed on the ground should the fight go there. He also has in locker, devastating leg kicks that could weaken any opponent’s legs and make shooting for a takedown that much more difficult.
Felipe Corales on the other hand boasts a higher strike accuracy than Gutierrez even though he is lacking in volume. He also has the reach advantage in this fight which should help him keep Gutierrez at a comfortable distance before he implements his wrestling. On the form card, Chris Gutierrez is unbeaten in his last five (4 wins and 1 draw) while Corales comes in with a mixed record of 3 wins and 2 losses in his last five. Our expert prediction for this one sees the unbeaten run of Gutierrez continuing past this fight as he secures the win on the night.
Records: Chris Gutierrez 16-3-2 | Felipe Corales 10-2-0 Main Card – Bantamweight (135lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 3:00 p.m. ET
Expert Pick #3 – Romanov to win @–119
Alexander Romanov is unbeaten in his professional career (currently on 14-0) and is on a 3-fight win streak in the UFC. “King Kong” usually has a clear path to victory – take his opponent down and ground and pound or submit them. His opponent this time out, and standing in the way of a fourth consecutive UFC win for the Moldovan is a mountain, THE mountain, Jared Vanderaa.
With 3 wins in his last 5 fights, Vanderaa is not exactly riding any form wave at the moment, but he is still a dangerous opponent at any stage. Capable of brutal KO’s and the occasional submission, Vanderaa is no pushover. Both fighters have very questionable cardio, so we don’t see the fight going the distance. And at the end of the early first-round flurry that should leave both fighters exhausted and one probably knocked out on the canvas, we see Alexander Romanov standing victorious.
Records: Alexander Romanov 14-0-0 |Jared Vanderaa 12-5-0 Preliminary Card – Heavyweight (265lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 1:30 p.m. ET
