Expert Pick #1 – Volkanovski to win @-800
Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski has a chance to defend his featherweight belt this weekend against a dangerous challenger in Chan “The Korean Zombie” Sung Jung. Many could argue that the Korean Zombie is undeserving of this title shot, but based on his skills as a fighter, he could present some real problems for the featherweight king, Volkanovski.
The Korean Zombie has the height and reach advantage in this matchup, and historically he does his best work against shorter fighters. However, he hasn’t met anyone quite as good as Volkanovski. Volkanovski brings his astonishing 20-fight win streak (ten in the UFC) into this bout, and he is just off the back of a successful title defence against Brian Ortega, who the Korean Zombie lost to back in 2020. Volkanovski’s devastating leg kicks, cardio, movement and striking, grappling and pressure would all prove too much for the Zombie to handle. Chan Sung Jung has a remarkable ability to withstand damage but only so much. Our experts predict a ninth straight win for Alexander Volkanovski and a third successful title defense.
Records: Alexander Volkanovski 23-1-0 | Chan Sung Jung 17-6-0 Main Card – Featherweight (145lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 1:00 a.m. ET
Expert Pick #2 – Yan to win @–450
When Aljamain “Funk Master” Sterling got awarded the UFC Bantamweight title off the back of an illegal Petr Yan knee in the first clash between these two, the fans in attendance and those around the world were livid at the way he conducted himself. Many opined that that was no way to win a championship and now the “Funk Master” has a chance to do it all again better this time against the same foe. Many months have passed since the first fight between Sterling and Yan and in that time Yan has taken on Cory Sandhagen and won the interim 135lbs title, while Sterling remained inactive.
The fighters are not so different in terms of skillset since their initial clash so that means Petr “No Mercy” Yan is still the better fighter. Sterling was able to hold his own in some instances in that first fight but as the rounds passed it was inevitably heading for a Yan win until the illegal knee. We hope there are no illegal strikes in this second fight and we expect Yan to put on a clinic to unify his undisputed title. Our experts predict a win for Petr Yan on the night.
Records: Aljamain Sterling 20-3-0 | Petr Yan 16-2-0 Main Card – Bantamweight (135lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 12:00 a.m. ET
Expert Pick #3 – Chimaev to win @–625
Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev and Gilbert Burns squaring off this weekend at UFC 273 represents the first big test for Chimaev in his sparkling UFC career so far. The hugely talented Swede is on a current winning streak of eleven (four straight in the UFC) but this fight against Burns who has lost only once (a championship fight against welterweight king Kamaru Usman), is a fight to show the UFC fans around the world if he is the real deal.
Chimaev comes into this fight with several advantages over Burns. Chimaev has the height and reach advantage, the grappling and also the durability advantages as well. He could arguably be a better striker as well but Burns is a very powerful and accomplished striker himself. We expect Chimaev to exercise his advantages by controlling the fight at a distance and landing heavy shots whenever he finds openings. Burns has shown to have a not-so-durable chin in his previous fights and the power of Chimaev can expose that once more. Khamzat Chimaev also has the option of taking the fight to the ground where he is also very deadly. His ability to take the fight anywhere and still be dominant is why our experts predict a convincing win for Chimaev on the night as he passes his biggest test so far in flying colors.
Records: Gilbert Burns 20-4-0 |Khamzat Chimaev 10-0-0 Main Card – Welterweight (170lbs) – Approx. Start Time: 11:00 p.m. ET
